    The Silver Strand is a 10 mile long isthmus that connects Coronado Island to Imperial Beach (the mainland). Its name comes from the density of silver seashells found here.

    Most of this land-stripe is part of Silver Strand State Beach and highway SR-75 runs its full length. One side of the beach fronts the Pacific Ocean and the other side fronts the San Diego Bay.

    In 1969, the state of California completed highway SR-75 across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge allowing for quicker access to the island than that offered by the bay ferries or driving the length of the Silver Strand.

    Imperial Beach Landing Field Base Website;
    The history of OLF Imperial Beach dates back to 1917 when the Army established "Aviation Field" on the current site. During the time "Aviation Field" was used for air gunnery practices, among other things, by the Army and was kept active throughout WWI. Today the mission of this base is to handle the overflow of helicopter squadrons traffic both VFR and IFR, from North Island. As a result the helicopter squadrons at North Island do 95 percent of their operations at Imperial Beach.

    Silver Strand Training Complex Base Website;
    Formerly known as the Naval Radio Receiving Facility (NRRF), has become the premier training facility for the military's special forces. It is known by locals as the "elephant cage" which is the nickname of a large landmark located there, the large "Wollan Weber" circular antenna. The city-like layout of the base also provides a realistic site for critical urban warfare training.

    Coronado Naval Amphibious Base Base Website;
    Established in 1943 after the land was literally created from the dredging of San Diego Bay done to allow large ships used in World War II to steam into Naval Station San Diego. It is the only Naval amphibious base on the West Coast. The amphibious base includes 5,500 yards of Pacific Ocean and bayside beachfront that is used for training. Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and its adjacent beaches provide training for Navy SEALs, amphibious insertion and other small units.
