The Silver Strand is a 10 mile long isthmus that connects Coronado Island to Imperial Beach (the mainland). Its name comes from the density of silver seashells found here.
Most of this land-stripe is part of Silver Strand State Beach and highway SR-75 runs its full length. One side of the beach fronts the Pacific Ocean and the other side fronts the San Diego Bay.
In 1969, the state of California completed highway SR-75 across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge allowing for quicker access to the island than that offered by the bay ferries or driving the length of the Silver Strand.
San Diego National Wildlife Refuge
Federal wildlife reserve covering the southern portion of San Diego Bay from the Silver Strand to Chula Vista. It supports a varied range of habitats such as coastal marshes, eel grass beds, freshwater marsh, and rare vernal pool wetlands. A wide range of shorebirds and waterfowl make their nesting grounds here.
The 3940-acre south bay refuge (est. 1999) is the largest mud-flat area in Southern California and an important stopping point for migratory birds following the Pacific Flyway. Visitors can bird-watch from several vantage points, walk and/or ride bicycles along a bike path bordering a good portion of the south bay from Coronado to Imperial Beach.
Loews Coronado Bay Resort
Additional on-site resort amenities include three award-winning restaurants, luxurious Sea Spa, bayside tennis courts, direct access to Silver Strand State Beach, private 80-slip marina, and a wealth of recreational activities.
Silver Strand State Beach
This state park includes not one but two beaches. Following along the isthmus connecting Coronado Island to Imperial Beach with extensive beachfront facilities on both the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay seperated only by Highway SR-75.
Combined with the area’s mild climate, the beaches make Silver Strand one of the area’s finest recreation destinations. Camping, fishing, swimming, surfing, boating, water-skiing, volleyball, and picnicking are popular activities. Anglers can fish for perch, corbina, grunion and yellow-fin croaker.
The water in the bay area is usually warmer and calmer, perfect for swimming and sailing. Ramadas, tables, barbecue pits, and fire rings are available in the area. Park visitors will be able to gain Wi-Fi access when they use a wireless device within about 150 to 200 feet of the Life Guard Tower located in the park.
Crown Cove Aquatic Center
It provides a wide range of educational and recreational activities to promote boating and water safety programs with the vision to expand to other boating sites in the area. Activities including surfing, sailing, kayaking, sand volleyball, and outriggers.
